4 Most Common Problems With Home Security Alarms

So you have an alarm system installed into your house and you are concerned about what may potentially go wrong with the alarm system. There are a number of common problems with home alarms that people experience and these are outlined within this article. Firstly and probably most common of all is on the control panel there are lights flashing that are not normally or are un recognised by the user. Common problems with home alarms can vary depending on what alarm system you are using and often the best advice will be refer to the operating guide that comes with the unit. More often than not though a flashing green light on the keypad or operating console could indicate that the unit has either lost its external power source or the battery power is low on the unit. If there is a flashing red light on the unit then this can indicate that the system has been in alarm and the unit could need to be reset. As indicated above always refer to the operating instruction guide before pressing any buttons that you are unfamiliar with on the unit.

Home Security - Low Cost Alarms That Work

Tip! Install a home security system that will monitor all the doors and windows in your home and sound a loud alarm when someone is breaking in. You may even want to subscribe to an outside monitoring service that will call local law enforcement after making sure that any alarm that is triggered is not a false alarm.

For most people their home is their biggest investment. In 2006 the median price for a home is expected to be $231,000. And of course everyone has insurance on their house. Everyone has insurance on their car as well. But more people have alarms for their car than their home. How does that make any sense?

Most people associate home security alarms with high ticket home security systems, home security alarm systems or home security monitoring that can cost $70 a month or more. I recently heard of a new home security company in New Mexico that is hiring ex police officers only to respond to alarm calls from members because quite frankly the response time from the police department was way to slow. Monitored security systems are effective no question about that. The question is-is there an effective way to protect your house without sending you to the poor house.

Obviously there is a point where cost becomes prohibitive. Each situation is different for sure. Depending on the risk level of the area in which you live many low cost home security devices will do the job just as well as the high priced toys. Remember the objective is to prevent a burglary-keep the intruder from intruding.

Tip! (b) False. It's true that radio waves cannot pass through metal, but a home would have to have steel walls, steel-plated floors, a sheet metal roof, iron support beams, and an aluminum staircase to prevent a wireless home security system from working.

Recently in Colorado Springs a woman was saved from an uncertain fate by an intruder trying to get into her house. She was awakened in the middle of the night by her barking dogs. Now I am not suggesting that everyone get a dog because quite frankly a lot of dogs are not suited for this anyhow. But let's look at some inexpensive alternatives that do work.

Tip! Make an initial survey of your house and from there, develop a home security plan.

The simplest and least expensive are security alarms activated by opening a window or door. When the alarm is activated a 110 decibel alarm goes off. Other systems using infrared technology detect motion in a room and set off an alarm. Yet another device sets of a realistic barking dog sound when movement is sensed from 30 feet away thru doors and walls. The barking gets louder and more frequent as the intruder approaches.

One more system that has a broader appeal is a motion activated annunciator system that can detect movement from 1000 feet away and "lets you know" if someone is approaching in your driveway, back yard or patio. This system can trigger a floodlight if it senses movement in a designated area. It can monitor up to six zones.

There are many home security alarms available that will do the job effectively without breaking the bank. Why take a chance with such a valuable investment. There are many choices available-one has to be right for your home.

Home Security Services Offer Deterrents To Crime

When a passive alarm system just is not going to do the job, you might need to consider one of several home security services designed to cover the house, property and notify the authorities when something seems out of place. Additionally, some companies involved in home security services offer more than system monitoring as they also offer periodic patrols to help deter any potential burglars from entering the home.

Many home security services companies are offering the free installation of home security systems provided the consumer sign a contract for monitoring services. A monthly charge of between $30 and $50 provides 24-hour a day monitoring of the system in the home. When an alarm is tripped, the home security services company is notified through the phone line. The company then attempts to contact the homeowner and if no contact is established will dispatch the local authorities.

In addition to monitoring the system for break-ins, many home security services also monitor for fire, flood and medical emergencies. Depending on the alarm code that is sent to the company, they can contact police, fire or ambulance, placing the well-being of everyone in the home in the hands of the home security services company.

Different Codes Require Different Responses

With most home security services companies, the code of the alarm instructs them on the type of response to offer. For most break-in alarms, they will call the home. If no one answers, or if the person who does answer cannot answer the security question, the police will be dispatched. In cases where the fire alarm or medical alert alarm is tripped, the fire department or ambulance can be dispatched before the company attempts to contact the home owner.

How the contact is made will depend on the terms of the contract agreed to by the company and the homeowner. Additionally, if a person is going to be performing work on their system they will need to notify the alarm company before tripping an alarm and before the home security services company dispatches emergency services.

False alarms are frowned on by police and fire agencies, which is why most home security services companies verify that a problem exists before calling in the safety troops. In many communities after a certain number of false alarms have been called in, the homeowner can face fines and, in worse case scenarios, the emergency services will not be dispatching, believing someone is crying wolf again.
